Localization in Algeria: Jointly Building ‘Livelihood Road’ along the Mediterranean Sea

The 25 MW photovoltaic power station project constructed by Genertec International Africa Branch in Algeria is the country’s first commercial photovoltaic power station. This project has improved the local power grid and Algeria’s energy mix, bringing a unique shine to the development and utilization of new energy in the desert.

In October 2021, the Africa Branch signed a contract for the expansion and renovation of the LPG distribution center in Algeria. Located in the Baraki area of the capital city Algiers, this project marks the first expansion and upgrade of the existing LPG storage and distribution facility in over 40 years. Adoption of the ambient temperature high-pressure storage technology can increase the capacity of the station by 40 percent, significantly improving the modernization level, operational efficiency, and safety performance of the entire plant area. It will greatly enhance the storage capacity and operational efficiency of LPG.

In April 2022, the SCADA project undertaken by Genertec International for the monitoring center of Algeria’s natural gas pipeline transportation network and its facilities successfully passed acceptance. The project upgraded and renovated the monitoring network’s various sites and the CSP center to ensure that all data from oil and natural gas pipelines are analyzed online in real-time. A cloud data platform was established to provide efficient operation mechanisms for pipeline transportation companies, adding more than US$40 million to foreign exchange annually. The project has achieved unified scheduling for national oil and gas transportation in Algeria, significantly improving the automation level of the entire pipeline network system, reducing labor intensity and labor costs, and providing a powerful guarantee for safe and economically optimized scheduling for Algerian national oil company Sonatrach.

In June 2022, the MTBE project in Algeria officially started. With a total amount of approximately US$466 million, it is Genertec’s first large-scale chemical project in Africa and Genertec International’s second contracted major international chemical project after the Indonesian soda ash export project in the 1990s. The project is expected to meet the demand of Sonatrach, Algeria’s national oil company, for high-octane gasoline additive MTBE products. Construction of the project will provide approximately 3,500 jobs, and when operational, the project will generate about 200 jobs, bringing significant socio-economic benefits to the western region of Algeria.

The MTBE project in Algeria is an important project to implement the country’s economic revival policy. Chen Zhong, the economic and commercial counselor at the Chinese Embassy in Algeria, stated that the MTBE project has significant strategic significance in promoting cooperation and friendship between the two countries. It has made significant contributions to strengthening the alignment of development strategies, deepening practical cooperation in various fields, and promoting the China-Algeria comprehensive strategic partnership. The Africa Branch has delivered tangible results in supporting Africa’s economic and social development and improving local people’s livelihoods, while witnessing the development of Belt and Road cooperation.
